The project management triangle has time, scope, and cost and at the main focus on Quality. It means none of the axes can be conceded, which therefore affect Quality adversely. So what’s about Quality? Well, everything boils down to Quality. Standards are Quality measure. High standards attribute to High Quality.
When thoughts come into mind from experience as Project Manager, I always made sure the quality team has the closing word on everything sent much to the mortification of the development team. They repeatedly brawled as to ‘who called the reports?’ and I will put my best foot forward “I do” to the eerie silence of the team.
A team is nothing but a combination of the people with their own talent, and that is the reason why we refer to employment more as Talent Acquisition. No meaning the terminology considered, no two persons are going to be the perfect match. Like-minded perhaps, but unlikely twins in thoughts. So it’s a mixed pool. Fundamentally it’s still the make, sell, support, and the Quality team falls under the support bucket while developers act as the breadwinners in the ‘make’ stream, and hence feel privileged and even entitled.

At the implementation of the project, when the programmers set already and get focused on writing Unit Cases, testers also are loaded with activity making test cases. So any claim of entitlement is very juvenile in judgment and I dare say never to expect anything additional other than the allocated.
One incident always enlivens and worth narrating. He was a big geek that touching his code is considered an insult. It is like dipped with Listerine mouth freshener every four minutes that the teeth are glittering white and perfumed. One may genius at the superiority taken in their job that they start to challenge “go through my code and any bug, I am toasted else you are roasted”. I found a demure girl, belying her age, walking up to the rock star “I am sorry but there seems to be a bug”. A volcano just erupted. When the pride is pricked, what else can you expect? Fight. I was looking at the argument from a distance but did not interfere. A mark to his pride, he steeds a brutal attack mitigating every nook and corner while the tester tolerantly gets him out. After around twenty minutes of clarification, the girl peacefully said: “I appreciate but it is a defect”. The developer slams his forehead and unloads a heap of curses in which one expletive burst out unbeknown. Now self-control and dignity can never be granted at any cost.
As the unhappy exchange occurred on the floor, the strident pitch made heads turn around. The woman was adamant and strangely did not emote at all but taken her composure. The developer, in loud disparity, was aggressive and a nervous wreck. However sharp you maybe, team play holds importance and position. Both come up to my place and my silence presents ANGER. My stare at nowhere but all ears, I just wanted to listen to one word ‘sorry’ as an alternative he defied everything that is inviolable and manner hardly propriety. I needed ‘Apologize. Now’. It was not a request but a command, and unwillingly he moved and muffled the apology. He may be a rock star but that woman’s stand made her much taller and he dwarfed in importance. Then I asked the tester to walk through the defect and she clearly made her case which was watertight. Confused with the defect and jumbled as to how his code can be broken, the developer was at his brains ends and close to tears. Passion is different from taking things personally.
After all, to err is human. Project management is a little bit easy as compared to managing people. My saying still remained unchanged ‘the tester must have the closing word’ and stopping “if the client detects a bug in the User Acceptance Testing, it may the tester who will be engaged to task”. Much depends on the shoulders of the tester who are goal-keepers. With an eye for particulars and inspecting instincts to snort something uncommon, they consider every test case as a suspicious and once influenced by merits transfer it for clearance. That tester is proven essential characters expected – the self-assurance, respect, deep knowledge, patience, perseverance, while the other displayed pettiness. Her closing statement was grieving of sentimentality but well said: “I am always worried about the Quality of the work just as you are about the values of Project Management.”
